Stonehenge: a cosmic temple.

Grand megalithic structure at Stonehenge is extant from time immemorial the mysterious monument of the past religion and science. For our contemporaries it is a puzzle, a miracle of architecture and the embodiment of creativity in a person. So what is it? A sacred burial ground or a prehistoric Observatory? To distinguish the original shape of Stonehenge possible today, although many stones there in its place.

Mystical aura. Stonehenge is one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world. The mystique of Stonehenge attracts so many tourists, especially during the summer solstice, which was already expressed concern about the monument caused harm. As a result, the site was fenced and public access to the stones is limited.

Standing in an open field in the middle of Salisbury plain in Wiltshire Stonehenge is a mystery that seems as old as time.

Strange concentric stone circles that make up this structure, is the result of the change of archaeological epochs that occurred for thousands of years. The monument, linking the late stone and early bronze ages, was erected in three or four phases over approximately 1500 years. However, the main work was done between 1800 and 1400 BC, But what remains of Stonehenge today is but a pale shadow of its former splendor. More than half of the stones either fell or went underground or disappeared in some other way.

Construction began around 2800 BC. (some experts believe that over the 3800), when it was dug out a wide circular ditch and formed earth mounds were made of 56 pits, later called “mines Aubrey” in honour of them opened in the seventeenth century John Aubrey. These holes were then grouted. It is believed that the first set there is a giant stone, Helston, standing at the entrance to earthen construction, still remained in their original place. Two more mines ring, ring Y and ring Z, that may have been dug with astronomical purposes, are located between the “mines Aubrey” and a massive stone ring in the center.

About 2100 BC, from Wales was brought in 80 blocks of blue Sandstone, which was composed of two concentric circles. Later instead of them had built a ring of 30 huge Sandstone monoliths called sourcename. Inside this ring there were two horseshoe-shaped structures – external consisted of five Sarsenovich of dolmens (two upright standing stones – menhirs and one horizontal, lying on them as a crossbar), and internal – from 19 cromlechs (hewn Sandstone slabs blue). The only tool available to the builders was a hoe, made of antler of red deer. Therefore, these architectural monuments are astounding.

The Saxons called the megalith Stonehenge means “hanging stone”. And medieval scribes mentioned his poetry under the name “Toy giant”. Although most scientists agree that this place is connected with the worship, about its true purpose, nothing was known. For example, who lived in the seventeenth century architect Inigo Jones argued that the stones are the remains of a Roman temple. But in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries became generally accepted point of view according to which a stone circle is nothing like the temple of the druids, worshipped the sun and sacrificed people. This is hardly true because Stonehenge was built at least 1000 years before the rise of the druid cult.

Arseny outer circle, reaching a five-meter height and weighing about 26 tons each, were dragged brought from Marlborough downs, located approximately 32 miles from Stonehenge. They were carefully fitted to each other so that vertical pillars and cross member are firmly connected by means of hinges. Produced in the Cambrian mountains in South-West Wales plate blue Sandstone, weighing up to 4 tons, were probably transported on rafts around the Welsh coast, then up the river Avon and finally dragged ashore.

Taking into account the amount of earthworks, the area with the greatest concentration in Britain of burial mounds, most modern archaeologists believe that the Stonehenge was a ceremonial cemetery.

Recently astronomers who claim that they allegedly “decoded” the stones, put forward the hypothesis that Stonehenge is a prehistoric computing mechanism, an astronomical calendar or astronomical calculator. This follows from the fact that the location of the stones, it seems, is directly related to the movement of the Sun, moon, planets and their ever-changing mutual influences. Thus, a unified theory that would explain the mysterious and legendary past of Stonehenge, not yet.
